 Stomio
is an ideal place for family holidays because of its rich sandy and
shallow beach. The lighthouse on the beach next to the port is the
registered landmark of Stomio. Every summer many cultural festivals
take place, the most important being the Feast of the Sea (together
with the feast of the sardine) which gathers lots of people from
different places. After all, Stomio is known as one of the biggest
fish places. There's also a feast at the monastery of the Assumption
at the celebration of Virgin Mary.
The patron saint of Stomio is Agios Nikolaos. Stomio has a Primary
school, a High School, a Police Station, a Port Police, a regional
Clinic and a Municipal camping. In Stomio there are the camp sites
of Agios Dimitrios and Agia Paraskevi together with the camp sites
of KE.THE.A in Apostolos Pavlos.
Stomio was
formerly called Tsagezi. This name originates from the Turkish
language and means "mouth of the river" (from the words "tea" and
agiezi). Its current name has the same origin because of the mouths
of the river Pineios. We must mention that the delta of Pineios near
Stomio is a protected water biotope of the European Ecological
Network Natura 2000. |
